Specialize Or Diversify – Kindle Or iPad?

without comments

For many people it must have seemed like an awfully long wait, but Apple have finally shown off their new tablet PC – the iPad. Somewhat predictably, it’s been given a mixed reception. Some are predicting that the iPad will make notebooks, netbooks and e-book readers obsolete. Others are less impressed and are suggesting that it is no more than a larger version of the iPod Touch.

For a long time now, since before we even knew what it was going to be called, the iPad has been given the title of the “Kindle Killer”. In one way that is just a little odd. After all, the two devices are very different and you might think that they were targeting different market segments. On the other hand, when the iPad starts shipping in March, the Kindle and the iPad will be the two hottest gadgets available. The fact that both Amazon and Apple are very successful corporate giants – both with impressive track records for changing the rules of the game in their market sectors – only feeds the flames.

Simply put, the Kindle is a very specialized piece of kit. It concentrates on doing one job extremely well – reading e-books. In addition to being a great e-book reader it also makes the sales process for books fast, simple and efficient. Good for both the customer and Amazon. The iPad is a jack of all trades. It performs a number of different functions and is very versatile. It’s color display makes it a good browser, you can play games on it, listen to music on it and use the huge Apple “Apps” library. You can even play music on it.

The Kindle is such a great e-book reader for a number of reasons. One of the most important is its e-ink technology display. This produces a reading experience which is very similar to reading printed text on paper and is much more comfortable than reading on a back-lit PC screen. It also has a very low power usage requirement – so it can go for a long time in between charging. However, the e-ink display, which is a great strength for an e-book reader, is monochrome and relatively slow to refresh – which means that it’s pretty poor, or completely non-functional, for use as a web browser or video player.

The iPad’s great color display makes it ideal for use as a web browser, watching video or playing games. On the other hand, the back-lit screen produces more eye strain than the Kindle display and it has a relatively short battery life of only ten hours.

Simply put, the Kindle is a very much better e-book reader than the iPad – but even after its next upgrade (rumoured to be soon) it’s not likely to be suitable for anything more than basic surfing. The iPad is a versatile multi-function device. Putting aside the e-book reader aspects of the analysis, it’s quite likely that some of its other functions may be performed better by other specialist devices. Which device you decide to go for will probably be determined by whether or not you’re prepared to sacrifice a little performance for all round versatility.

Form A Queue If You’re A Kindle Killer

without comments

There are an incredible number of manufacturers currently fighting it out in the new, but ever expanding, e-book reader market. The high level of competition is a strong indication that rapid growth is anticipated in this sector. And this will be good news for consumers as manufacturers strive to enhance specifications and offer lower prices.

The list of major players who have e-book readers in various stages of development – and in some cases, ready for imminent release – is impressive. Plastic Logic, Barnes and Noble, Sony, Asus, iRex, – don’t forget Microsoft and Apple (as if) – are all lined up and jostling for their fair share of the market.

There can be little doubt about the market leader at the moment of course. The Kindle reader from Amazon has not only dominated the market, but has been driving and shaping its development since it hit the market in November 2007. Now into its second generation with the Kindle 2 and the large display Kindle DX, Amazon has a 60% share of the American e-book reader market. The Kindle reader is now their top selling product and, on October 19 this year Amazon commenced shipping the international Kindle 2 to over 100 countries around the world. It’s a backhanded compliment to Amazon that almost every new e-book reader in development (and there’s no shortage of these, the list above is far from exhaustive) which shows any potential whatsoever, is instantly christened the “Kindle Killer”. Currently, the Kindle sets the benchmark which must be attained, and then bettered, in order to achieve success.

If it appears as if the Kindle’s present leadership position is unassailable, then it’s probably worth considering that Amazon were a somewhat late entrant to the market when the Kindle was released. The original e-book reader is generally considered to be the Franklin eBookMan which launched in 1999 – ten years ago. The Sony PRS was also released before the Kindle’s launch in 2007.

The Kindle was such a phenomenal success for Amazon due to a number of different factors. First of all, Amazon had a strong association with books, being among the largest online retailers. They also offered a huge choice of books to download – at the moment they have in excess of 300,000 titles on their Kindle store. The option of wireless connectivity – with no ongoing fees – was another big selling point.

Just as Amazon came from nowhere to secure the number one position, one of the other contenders could do exactly the same – and in the short term. For example, Barnes and Noble have more than one million titles available for download to their new Nook e-book reader. They will also use the ePub format – which the majority of readers in development seem to be favoring. Kindle’s format is proprietary. Purchase a Kindle book – read it on your Kindle.

The Nook will also permit you to “lend” books to your friends and family for a fortnight. During this time, the borrower can read it and the lender will be unable access to it on their Nook – exactly the same as lending a “real” book. The big advantage is that, unlike a dog eared paperback, you can be sure that you will get it back.

Sony’s next generation reader – the Daily Edition – will have a large format display, just like Amazon’s Kindle DX – but unlike the DX it will have touch screen controls. It will also allow users to borrow e-books from participating public libraries on loan. Again – just like a conventional book.

Many of the other readers in the pipeline have features that could well make them more appealing than the Kindle. Amazon definitely have a fight looming – but it seems sure that they won’t surrender their number one position without a struggle. They have played a pivotal role in the development of the market up to now, and bearing in mind the critical importance of the Kindle to their current business model, it seems reasonable to expect them to have a few new tricks up their corporate sleeve.

Considering the high level of activity amongst all of these top manufacturers, it seems reasonable to predict that the e-book reader market is about to start growing even more rapidly. In all probability, the fierce competition that about to be unleashed will create a downward pressure on prices and take e-book readers out of the high tech domain and firmly into the mainstream personal mobile tech market.

Today’s Amazon Kindle is Better Than Ever

without comments

Amazon’s new Kindle 2 reader is a great option for many people. This revolutionary wireless reading device offers you an entire library in the palm of your hand, hosting far more books than the previous generation of readers and allowing you to carry them anywhere. This reader also gives you great new options like reading the text aloud and reading all kinds of file formats. Let’s look at some of the reasons it’s a great idea to choose a Kindle 2.

The Kindle is great if you travel. If you love to read, you’ll appreciate having instant access to reading material anyplace you go. It takes up far less space than traditional books, and it’s more durable, too. You can add almost anything to your Kindle and even convert files from document, text and PDF formats.

This next generation of wireless reading device is a big improvement over the original, too. It has a longer lasting battery, faster download times, and a bigger memory space. The Kindle is so thin, it’s no thicker than a pencil, and it’s easy to take with you anyplace you go.

You can find almost any book on the Kindle store, making it possible to read pretty much any book at any time. Ebooks are becoming more and more popular with publishers, so you’ll always have plenty of great options for reading material. It really does let you carry a while library. In addition, ebooks cost a lot less than hardcover or even most paperback books.

Bookmarking and notetaking abilities are much better than the previous version, and the Kindle 2 allows you to write in the margins of your ebook without worry about damage. A regular paper book can’t offer that.

Want a dictionary? Check out the online version that gives you the ability to find what a word means just by selecting it. Illustrations are available in 16 shades of gray, an improvement over the older 4 shade version. It’s still not full color, but it’s a real improvement for viewing, even illustrations that were originally in color.

If you love reading but want something a little easier and more portable, you owe it to yourself to check out the Amazon Kindle 2. It’s an amazing piece of wireless reading device technology that just made reading a whole lot easier.
