The Asus G73JH-A1 left an impression right from the time when the system was launched at CES 2010. The laptop was came as a gaming laptop with huge all-black 17 inch full HD wide-screen, 8GB of memory, a Core i7 processor, a Blu-ray combo drive, a 1GB ATI Radeon HD5870 graphics card and dual 7,200rpm 500GB hard drives. But what makes it even more tempting is its price of $1,700, which simply makes the system irresistible. And unlike most of the other laptops that we’ve seen at CES, the laptop in fact turns up as the Asus G73JH-A1.

Though, the G73JH-A1 definitely is not the fastest gaming laptop in the market, but yes, if you want the decent graphics performance and mobile processor available then you can consider it. Also, it’s not all that bad when it comes to gaming capability, and can easily handle medium to high graphic games, along with some other demanding tasks.

But if you are running short on budget and don’t want to spend heavily then you can consider the Asus G73JH-RBBX05, it has most of the features of G73JH-A1, but doesn’t have that much space, memory, has a lower-resolution display and Blu-ray playback, but is priced at $1,200. As per us both the systems are superbly performing notebooks for the money and are well configured, too. Though, we had some issues with its design, but they aren’t big enough to stop us from recommending it to our readers looking for a powerful desktop replacement.

Design

The Asus G73JH-A1’s chassis seems an inspiration from the F-117 stealth fighter jet, and the angular chassis here is belligerent-looking and huge. But still it lags somewhere. the bright color schemes and sporadic lights that have been seen in previous Asus gaming systems were gone was found by us. The G73JH-A1 is a rather simple laptop with lusterless black lid and a pleasing rubberized texture keyboard deck. Frequent wiping for removing finger prints and smudges is not required in the keyboard. Placed on the lid is a simple silver Asus logo along with a tiny imprinted Republic of Gamers symbol below it. The only visible lights on the system are of the backlit buttons and a single beam of blue light put into the underneath edges of the LCD’s bezel. The G73JH-A1 is a sufficiently large notebook and it clearly is way far from being a travel-friendly notebook. But the interesting thing here is that despite its humongous size the system weighs only 2 pounds.

Positioned at the top and at the far left of the keyboard are three buttons: one button shuts the blue light under the screen off, then another one for activating a TwinTurbo mode, and the last one for changing screen color modes. The options for changing the screen color are Normal, Vivid, Gamma Corrected, Soft, Theater and a custom option. The system doesn’t have any separate media controls, although there are markings on the directional and function keys.

It clearly is not a big deal, but we would have appreciated separate mute/volume keys. The keyboard here is backlit keyboard with the intensity of lights being adjustable. Even though the keyboard here is sufficiently sized, when you compare it with the size of the system it looks a bit cramped. The Asus G73JH-A1 ’s 2.1 speaker system offers decent performance and sufficiently loud without causing any distortion. Though, the speakers sounded loud and clear, still its better you get headphones or desktop speakers for enjoying the media or gaming completely.
