Computer Training On Vector And Bitmapped Images
There are two ways in which computer graphics can be generated on a computer: as vectors or as bitmaps. Bitmapped images consist of a series of tiny squares called pixels, while vector graphics are essentially instructions to a computer to create a series of geometrical shapes each with a given set of attributes. Bitmaps are typical continuous tone images such as photographs. Vectors are typical flat artwork designs such as logos, charts, symbols and illustrations.
Vector images can be generated in a number of programs. Firstly, there are the specialist graphics programs like AutoCad. Then there are general purpose drawing programs such as Adobe Illustrator and CorelDRAW. And, finally, there are any number of non-graphic programs which nevertheless inlude drawing tools. This last category would include all the various programs in Microsoft Office.
Since vector images are essential mathematical formulas, the quality of such images is not fixed but, rather, depends on the environment in which the image is created. If an image is displayed on the screen, it will be rendered at screen resolution; if it is printed on a high resolution printer, it will be printed at high resolution; and so on.
In contrast to vector graphics, bitmapped images are often acquired rather than created from scratch. Photos are typical loaded onto a computer from a digital camera or scanned in. As far as manipulating bitmapped images, the most widely used software is definitely Adobe Photoshop which is available in a few different flavours such as Photoshop Elements as well as the main program: Photoshop CS4. Other programs include Corel PHOTO-PAINT and Paint Shop Pro.
One important difference between the two types of image is that the quality of bitmapped images is determined when the image is acquired: when the photograph is taken or when the print is scanned. Although the quality of a bitmap can be downsampled (reduced), it is not possible to increase its resolution or quality.
As regards conversion from one graphic type to another, it is far easier to convert a vector image to a bitmap than the other way round. The process of converting a vector to a bitmap is called rasterization and is usually very successful: in fact, most bitmap editing software will allow you to specify the quality of the resulting bitmap. To convert bitmaps into vectors, you will normally use a utility to trace the lines and filled areas of the bitmap. However, the resulting vector image is normally difficult to manipulate. Adobe Illustrator has a powerful utility for tracing bitmaps.
So, which one is easier to learn, vector drawing programs or bitmap editing programs? Well, when we run Adobe training courses, we have noticed that most delegates seem to find bitmapped images easier to work with. This may of course just be because they find working with rich media more visually appealing. However, we will normally advice delegates who plan to take Adobe Creative Suite training to start with a Photoshop course before tackling Adobe Illustrator.

Division Of Labour With InDesign’s Book Command
When you choose New from the File menu in Adobe InDesign, you may have noticed the option to create a new book without ever knowing exactly what a book is. Well, in fact, books are a fairly nifty feature: they allow you to take a series of related InDesign document and treat them as a single entity; a book. All documents in the book can then share resources such as paragraph and character styles, colour swatches, master pages, sections and page numbering.
Once you’ve created a book, by choosing File-New-Book, the Book panel is displayed. It contains a panel menu with all the options necessary for managing a book. The first task is to add some documents to the book: from the Book panel menu, choose “Add Document” and select the documents you want to be treated as part of the book. The book panel will now act as a launch pad for each of the documents it contains: simply double-click a document to open it.
The book file can now be saved. The book is a separate entity to the documents it contains and the documents in a book do not have to reside in the same location as the book or as each other. To save the book, choose Save Book in the Book panel menu.
Next, elect one of the documents in the book to be treated as the style source. The document chosen as the style source will be used as the master document in the process known as synchronization whereby InDesign replaces the colour swatches and styles of all documents in the book with those in the style source document.
To set page numbering across the whole book, choose Book Page Numbering Options in the Book panel menu. The default is “Automatically Update Page & Section Numbers”: this will cause InDesign to number pages in the documents within the book according to the order in which they are listed in the Book panel.
Books are a terrific tool for division of labour since the fact that a document is part of a book does not stop it from being a regular InDesign document. If a book contains ten documents, ten different people can work on each of those documents and then, at the end, the whole book can be preflighted, printed and output as PDF as a single unit.
Both tables of contents and indexes can also be generated for an entire book as well as for a single document. Simply create the table of contents or index in the normal way but activate the option “Include Book Documents”.
